Command palette
Run actions, open folders and start searches by typing, on macOS, iPad and iPhone.
The command palette is a search field for actions. Type a few letters, pick an entry, press Return.
Opening it
- Mac: ⌘K anywhere in the main window.
- iPad and iPhone: ⌘K on a hardware keyboard, or the Command palette button (⌘ symbol) at the top of the folder list or in the navigation drawer.
Finding an entry
The field says “Command or search…”. You do not need to type whole words: the letters only have to appear in order, so arc finds Archive and nm finds New Message. Entries also match hidden keywords in English and German, for example verfassen for New Message.
↑ and ↓ move the highlight, Return runs the highlighted entry and Esc closes the palette; on the Mac, a click outside closes it too. On macOS 13, the arrow keys and Esc do not work in the palette; click the entry instead.
Searching from the palette
As soon as you type, the first entry is Search for “…” with your text. Choosing it runs the text as a search in the message list, with the full search syntax: from:anna is:unread works here as in the search field.

The shortcut next to an entry is the key that does the same without the palette. Send Again opens a copy of a message you sent in a new compose window. Archive, Flag, Unflag and Delete apply to the selected messages or the current one; Mark as Read and Mark as Unread apply to the open message.
⇧⌘M opens the palette with a single purpose: it lists Move to: for every folder of every account, with the full folder path. It is available when a message is selected and you are not composing a message.
On iPad and iPhone
The palette on iPad and iPhone is smaller. It offers:
- the unified mailboxes and every folder of every account
- Refresh
- Mark as read, Mark as unread and Delete for the message that has focus in the list
- Search for “…”
Compose, reply, archive and move are not in the palette on iPad and iPhone. Use the toolbar or the iPad shortcuts for them.
