Write a message
Recipients with Cc and Bcc, attachments, templates, priority and read receipts on the Mac, iPhone and iPad.
Starting a message
On the Mac, click New Message or press ⌘N. The compose window can be minimized into a small chip at the bottom right and restored from there. On iPhone and iPad, tap the compose button at the bottom of the message list.
While you type an address, FOLD suggests recipients from the addresses in your mail history; it needs no access to your contacts for this. Addresses that look wrong are flagged with “This address looks invalid (typo?).” or “Possible typo in the domain.”, and Apply suggestion corrects them.
Cc and Bcc
Cc and Bcc are hidden until you need them. On the Mac, use the Show/hide Cc/Bcc button next to the recipients; on iPhone and iPad, tap Cc/Bcc. When a reply to all prefills Cc, the fields appear automatically.
Formatting
Both platforms offer a rich text mode with bold, italic, underline, links, bulleted and numbered lists. On the Mac, switch it on with Enable rich text/HTML.
Attachments
- Mac: the paperclip button (Attach file), or drag files into the compose window.
- iPhone and iPad: From library for photos, Choose file for documents.
The attachments of a message may add up to 25 MB, because most mail servers reject larger messages. Remove attachment takes a file off again.
Templates
Templates hold text and an optional subject for recurring messages. The Templates menu inserts one into the current message. Save as template stores the subject and text of the current draft as a new template, and Manage templates … lets you edit, delete and reorder them. Templates are stored on the device. On iPhone and iPad the menu sits in the More section of the compose form.
Priority and read receipt
Priority marks a message as High priority, Normal priority or Low priority. Request read receipt asks the recipient’s mail app to confirm that the message was read; the recipient may decline.
Before it leaves
If the subject is empty or the text mentions an attachment that is missing, FOLD asks Send anyway? with the reason, for example “You mention an attachment but haven’t attached one.”
On the Mac, ⌘Return sends. Send Later offers In one hour, This evening, Tomorrow morning, Tomorrow evening, Next week and Pick a Time…. A scheduled message waits in the outbox until then and can still be edited.
Every message first waits in the outbox for a few seconds; see Undo send. Signing and encryption are covered in Encryption and signing.
