Aliases, names and signatures

An account can send from several addresses, each with its own sender name and signature, and replies go out from the address a message was sent to.

Identities and aliases

Every account starts with one identity: its primary address with the name you entered during setup. Aliases are further sender addresses of the same account. They use the account’s servers and login; your provider decides whether it accepts mail sent from them.

Where to manage them:

  • Mac: Settings > Aliases, then choose the account.
  • iPhone and iPad: your account picture > Accounts > the account, section Aliases.

Available actions are Add alias (address and an optional name), Edit name, Edit signature, Set as default and Remove alias. The default identity cannot be removed; make another identity the default first.

Signatures

Each identity has a Signature (text) and an optional Signature (HTML, optional). FOLD adds the signature of the address in From to new messages. In plain text the signature is visible in the message body; in rich text mode FOLD inserts the HTML signature when the message is sent.

Choosing the sender

The From field lists the identities of all active accounts. Picking an identity also picks the account that sends the message, so you can switch accounts from within a draft. On the Mac the tooltip reads Choose sender (primary address or alias).

On the Mac, the order in Settings > Accounts decides the default sender for new messages: the topmost active account is the default. Change the order with the arrow buttons.

Replies from the right address

When you reply, FOLD checks the original message’s To addresses and then its Cc addresses. The first address that belongs to an identity of the receiving account becomes the sender. If none matches, FOLD uses that account’s default identity. Only identities of the account that received the message take part.

FOLD does not evaluate the Delivered-To header. If a message reached you as Bcc or through a forwarding rule, your address is not in To or Cc, and FOLD suggests the default identity. Change From before sending if you want another address.

Custom headers (Mac only)

Settings > Mail headers adds headers to every outgoing message of an account, for example your own X-headers. Header names must be ASCII without spaces or colons, values must not contain line breaks, and headers that FOLD sets itself are reserved. iPhone and iPad do not offer this setting.
